Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have both been fined £84 each following the first practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix.

The duo were both ruled to have gone over the speed limit in the pit lane and therefore have received a fine from the Stewards. The Red Bull drivers were ruled to have both driven exactly 0.1 km/h over the limit in the pit lane at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

However, it was not only Red Bull drivers to have faced the fine, RB star Daniel Ricciardo was also ruled to have exceeded the limit and therefore received the same financial punishment.

The documents from the Stewards showing that both Verstappen and Perez had exceeded the 80 km/h was sent to Red Bull on the afternoon of the practice session, wasting no time in issuing the fines.

The reason in Verstappen’s letter from the Stewards read: “The competitor (Oracle Red Bull Racing) is fined €100. Car 1 exceeded the pit lane speed limit which is set at 80 km/h for this event by 0.1 km/h.

“Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Champer 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.

“Decisions of the Stewards are taken independently of the FIA and are based solely on the relevant regulations, guidelines and evidence presented.”

Verstappen topped the first practice in Belgium but the 26-year-old will face a grid penalty for Sunday’s race. He will drop 10 places after taking his fifth internal combustion engine (ICE) meaning that he has exceeded the number of power units he could use for the season.

The Dutchman certainly laid down a marker with his performance though, registering a time of 1:44.372 on soft tyre. Oscar Piastri, fresh from his victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix, finished 0.531 seconds behind his rival.

Williams’ Alex Albon then completed the top three after finishing 0.727 seconds behind Verstappen, with Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton forced to settle for fourth and fifth respectively.

Verstappen was not alone in receiving a penalty on Friday, with RB’s Yuki Tsunoda set to start from the back of the grid after taking new power unit elements.
