Ferrari have reportedly dropped out of the race to sign departing Red Bull aerodynamicist Adrian Newey with Aston Martin and McLaren the final two teams battling to sign the 65-year-old for 2025 and beyond.

After Newey’s departure from Red Bull was confirmed ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the immediate suspicions dictated that he was likely going to join Fred Vasseur’s blossoming project at Ferrari. Some Italian reports even suggested that the contracts were all but signed between the two parties.

However, over time that speculation has cooled, and according to a report from Motorsport Italy, Ferrari are now out of the race to sign the Essex-born engineer. Vasseur and Newey did engage in extensive talks, but the Brit would prefer to stay in his home country and the Italian constructor had no intention to increase the already considerable salary on offer.

Ferrari’s reluctance can be understood, given Newey’s desire to take up a consultant role, which would see him work remotely rather than on-site in Maranello. This arrangement does not work for the Prancing Horse, who want someone to lead the department from the ground.

Vasseur and Ferrari now have a new priority, after technical director Enrico Cardile’s departure to Aston Martin was confirmed in the aftermath of the British Grand Prix. His signing followed that of CEO Andy Cowell, who was announced as a new capture for the Silverstone-based team ahead of their home race.

These signings will no doubt aid Lawrence Stroll’s team in their attempt to lure Newey to Silverstone. As per the report, Aston Martin are currently leading the race to sign the legendary aerodynamicist after he enjoyed a private tour around their brand new facilities near the British GP circuit.

However, Aston Martin aren’t alone in the race. McLaren are also believed to be in talks with the 65-year-old over a sensational return to Woking.

Newey worked with the British constructor between 1997 and 2005 before signing on to the Red Bull project for 2006 and beyond.

Whatever Newey’s decision, the public will not know the outcome until September at the earliest, due to an agreement with Red Bull that prevents him from announcing his terms until that deadline has passed.
