Martin Brundle has explained that he is the one who 'should be apologising' after Sir Brian May expressed his regret over turning down an interview with the Sky Sports F1 broadcaster at the British Grand Prix.

May was standing near the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton on the grid when Brundle approached him for the interview. On two occasions the broadcaster was turned down.

The legendary Queen guitarist explained to Brundle that he did not know enough about the sport to offer a worthwhile conversation for the Sky Sports F1 pundit, opting not to converse with the 65-year-old.

After the event, May wrote an apology on his website. "I had a great day at Silverstone thanks to the kindness of the Mercedes team and my grandson had some truly historic birthday moments," he noted.

"And by the way, apologies to Mr Brundle. Absolutely no intention of snubbing you. All you see is someone who is nervous of speaking about something of which he has little understanding and anxious to get to where he is supposed to be."

Following May's heartfelt words, Brundle took to social media to reply. "It is me who should be apologising to Sir Brian May, not him to me for the gridwalk on Sunday at Silverstone.

"I didn’t address him as Sir Brian, and I shouldn’t have approached him twice when he wasn’t up for a chat on live TV. Nobody is ever obliged to talk to me on the grid, or anywhere else for that matter."

With so many celebrities on the grid nowadays, Brundle is often dragged into awkward or controversial conversations. It is also not uncommon for guests to turn down conversations with the Sky Sports F1 broadcaster.

In a similar manner to May, Brundle was snubbed by Hollywood superstar Cara Delavigne at the British GP last season. Later it came to light that she had been instructed by an F1 representative not to chat on the grid.
