Max Verstappen gives Red Bull exit verdict after George Russell’s bold Mercedes comments

Max Verstappen's Red Bull future has been a constant point of contention throughout the 2024 campaign.

Max Verstappen has insisted that he is happy at Red Bull, citing the team’s significant investment in their power unit operation as a key factor influencing his optimism for the future. These comments come despite significant interest from Mercedes, who want the Dutchman to replace the Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen and Red Bull kicked off the 2024 campaign as the clear frontrunners, winning four of the opening five races and going relatively unchallenged by the rest of the field. However, since Lando Norris pipped the reigning champion to victory in Miami, that has changed.

The 26-year-old now travels to Montreal with just one win from the last three races and with the RB20 struggling to perform over bumps and kerbs, the signs point towards another difficult weekend for Verstappen and the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite these concerns, the Red Bull star insists he is happy at Milton Keynes

"Well, it doesn't work that way," Verstappen responded when asked if rival teams were an attractive proposition to him. "I think we still have a very, very fast car. And if you look at the average of the season so far, I think we have the fastest car. Otherwise, you don't lead the championship.

“But I'm happy with where I am now. There is also so much investment in the engine. And I'm satisfied. We just have to keep working and trying to improve our package. That's all I'm thinking about at the moment."

If Verstappen changes his mind, Mercedes would be his most likely destination. Toto Wolff has been chasing the three-time world champion’s signature all season long and George Russell made it clear that he has no qualms about going toe-to-toe with the Red Bull ace.

"I wouldn't shy away from jumping alongside Max, nor would I shy away from him jumping in with us,” he said. “I had the biggest challenge of joining Mercedes against the greatest driver of all time statistically, in qualifying and in the race, and I performed against him, and that's all I can do.

"Max can take a year off for 2026 and see which the best team is. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he did that. Remember, 2026 is a lottery. So, you truly don't know what will transpire.

"I am a loyal guy and Mercedes have given me the opportunity, but I want to be a world champion. That's not us at the moment. But a year ago McLaren were the slowest team and now they are the quickest."
