Lewis Hamilton sent classy message by Pierre Gasly after sealing 'interesting' switch
Lewis Hamilton surprised the motorsport world with his move to Ferrari, and now Pierre Gasly has contributed his thoughts on the switch.
Pierre Gasly has wished Lewis Hamilton ‘the best’ after the seven-time world champion sealed a fairytale late-career move from Mercedes to Ferrari for the 2025 season. The legendary Brit has kickstarted a domino effect in the driver market with a seat at the Silver Arrows now unexpectedly available next year.
Hamilton signed a new two-year contract extension with Mercedes last summer, but with the team failing to make major inroads on Red Bull’s advantage towards the end of 2023, the 39-year-old has opted to roll the dice, signing for Ferrari after what will be 12 years with the Brackley-based team.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Hamilton’s move after launching Alpine’s 2024 challenger, Gasly said: “I think it’s going to be interesting. It’s obviously the most successful driver of our sport leaving Mercedes after a very long collaboration, and probably the most successful collaboration of our sport.
“So it’s going to be interesting, joining Ferrari. It was a bit of a shocking move, I guess, for everyone. But definitely, I wish him the best. He’s towards the end of his career and it was probably now or never and they both grabbed that opportunity with the team and himself. So yeah, it’s going to be interesting to follow that.”

With a seat now available at Mercedes, Gasly will be one of the drivers keeping tabs on the situation at Brackley. Like his team-mate Esteban Ocon, the Frenchman is one of the 13 drivers out of contract at the end of the upcoming 2024 campaign, leaving him free to negotiate with other teams on the grid.
However, when asked what Hamilton’s switch could mean for his future at Alpine, Gasly explained: “Obviously it changes slightly the dynamics of the driver market and the whole silly season.

“Obviously I started with Alpine last year. I know the project I’m working on. I have the end of my contract at the end of the year and obviously, there are conversations ongoing.
“I think the situation is pretty clear, but at the moment I just want to see what this car is capable of. Ultimately my goal is to fight at the front. I believe it’s possible with Alpine. I’m 28, good experience, I’m in my prime and that’s what I’m working for. I want to fight for wins, for podiums and be up there.”
