Lewis Hamilton: Sebastian Vettel reveals Mercedes problem with surprise admission
SEBASTIAN VETTEL thinks Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes may not be one of the leading teams this season.
Formula 1: Sebastian Vettel CRASHES during test day
Mercedes have not recorded any of the quickest times during the last week-and-a-half of testing in Barcelona.
The Ferrari pairing of Vettel and Charles Leclerc have been fairly impressive, as have Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly.
But Hamilton and team-mate Bottas appear to be holding something back.
Vettel was asked who he thinks will be competing at the front of the grid this year.
“I have not analysed the times so much,” he replied.
“But I think we should be good. Red Bull looks very strong and consistent, and reliable so far.
“There could also be a few surprises. Alfa Romeo, for example, looks very good.”
Mercedes’ exclusion from the list will surprise many Formula One fans.
And he thinks Hamilton’s attempt at a sixth world title could be one of his toughest yet.
“It’s a bit difficult to read what’s going on,” Vettel added.
“Some runs look good, others less so.”
“I’m a little surprised but everyone chooses their way. And it only really starts in Melbourne anyway.”
However, Vettel had his own problem in testing as he crashed into the wall after just 40 laps yesterday morning.
Although the incident was put down to a ‘mechanical failure’, the German lost crucial practice time.
He was taken to a medical centre for a quick check up but was given the all-clear.
