A young boxer was horrifically found dismembered in a river just hours after losing his first professional fight. The remains of Yeiner Andres Gomez Sandoval, 28, were found floating in the river by fishermen and later identified by his mother through his distinctive tattoos. There is an ongoing search in the area as some parts of his body are yet to be found.

Yeiner lost his only pro contest against Leider Galvis in the main event of the WBA Future Champions Colombia contest at the Cuadrilatero gym in Barranquilla. He lost by a unanimous points decision, his only defeat from seven fights in total. Five of his wins came by knockout.

After the fight, he spent time with his mother and daughter and was last seen leaving his home in the Carrizal neighbourhood of Barranquilla on Sunday afternoon, which was Mother’s Day in Colombia.

He was reported missing soon after, with family unable to contact him and his phone getting switched off.

Yeiner’s remains were discovered the following afternoon in the Magdalena River, just outside the city of Barranquilla, Colombia.

His mother then identified him through a snake tattoo on his torso, a dragon’s head on his shoulder, the name of his brother on his neck and a heart on his chest.

Trainer Miguel Angel Guzman told Colombian media that he had no knowledge of any threats or personal issues that could have explained his death in such a manner.

Yeiner was seen as a rising prospect in his country and was tipped for a promising career after turning pro.

Investigators are currently reconstructing his final movements and determining the reason behind his death. They are unable to give him a proper burial for now as the rest of his remains are yet to be discovered.

His friends and family have called for justice while authorities are yet to release any official hypothesis regarding the killing.
