Tyson Fury family member calls out John Fury and whole team after Oleksandr Usyk loss

Boxing fans are still working out why Tyson Fury lost to Oleksandr Usyk, but the Gypsy King's former trainer think he has worked it out

Tyson Fury’s former trainer and uncle Peter Fury has criticised the Gypsy King’s father John for his presence during the loss to Oleksandr Usyk. John joined Fury’s trainers SugarHill Steward and Andy Lee in the former WBC heavyweight champion’s corner in Saudi Arabia.

The former bare knuckle boxer has been roundly criticised for often being the loudest person in the corner and for telling Fury he was winning in the 12th round.

While Tyson and his promoter Frank Warren have both said they thought the Morecambe-based fighter would leave the Middle East as boxing’s first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis, most figures outside the Fury camp believe Usyk won comfortably.

Peter praised Tyson for putting on a top quality fight which will be remembered for a long time. However, he was less than impressed with his brother John. “Some can be too emotional in the corner, someone is giving the wrong advice ‘You’re winning it’,” Peter said in an interview with October Red.

“I think the only one who spoke a little bit of sense in that corner, in the last dying stretch of it, I’m not criticising the rest of them, was Sugar Hill. He said: ‘Put it on him’. I’m sure I heard that. ‘Go forward, stop crossing your legs, set on your shots’. I think that was the best advice out of all of it.

“For me there was just too many people, but maybe Tyson wants that, I don’t know. It’s been years since he dealt with me. I don’t know what the situation is, but clearly, for me, the game plan was wrong and there were too many people in the corner. Whichever of them one, two or three, only one of them should have been doing the speaking. Whichever one it was, just one. not three or four, because, how can you listen to that?”

Usyk won the clash via a split decision. Two judges awarded him the victory with scorecards of 115-112 and 114-113, with one judge giving the bout to Fury with a score of 114-113. A dominant final two rounds or a knockdown could have turned the fight in Fury’s favour.

When asked what he would have told Tyson if he was still in his corner, Peter said: “My advice would have been, ‘I don’t care if you have got one leg and you’re dying in the corner, get in there, you are down and you’re losing this fight. Get in there and go out on your back, put it on him’. That’s what should have happened in the corner.”

Fury is now set to fight Usyk in a rematch on December 21. And Peter thinks the Gypsy King will need to be more aggressive if he is going to avenge his one career loss.

“For me he was a big man who never used his tools and I thought there was a lot wrong with it,” Fury said in an interview with October Red. He added: “I think they got the tactics wrong, I think the game plan was all wrong and that’s what I think of it.

“Still, it was a good fight to watch. They’ve both done well, exceptionally well, regarding the last couple of rounds, I could see what people could see, but did Tyson have enough in his tank to come out and give an avalanche of shots or was he so tired he was getting through it?”
