Tyson Fury reveals the punch Deontay Wilder threw that could have killed him
Tyson Fury believes he’s lucky to have not been killed by Deontay Wilder in their heavyweight title showdown last December.
Tyson Fury is adamant the punch Deontay Wilder knocked him down with in the final round of their heavyweight classic could’ve killed him.
Fury challenged Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title last December in Los Angeles, and the pair put on arguably the most memorable fight in the division’s recent history.
After being outboxed for the majority of the contest, Alabama native Wilder knocked Fury down in the ninth round with a short left hook.
And in the 12th, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ floored the lineal heavyweight champion with a vicious right-cross-left-hook combination.
Fury looked as if he was unconscious but rose from the canvas to win the remainder of the round, though it wasn’t enough for him to win the fight as it was scored split draw.
‘The Gypsy King’ reflected on the second knockdown during an appearance on Sirius XM Radio and admitted he counted his lucky stars after getting up from the hammer blow.
“It didn’t hurt at all,” Fury said of Wilder’s vicious right hand. “I didn’t feel any pain so probably not (unconscious).
“I think when you get hit in certain areas in the head you lose your coordination, you lose everything. It just goes for a second or so.
That was the type of punch that sometimes people won’t wake up from
“But when you come around you either get up and your legs are gone, or you get up and you’re okay like I was in that twelfth round.
“As easy as I got up, I may never have got up. That was the type of punch that sometimes people won’t wake up from.
“Especially hitting me with a right hand and as I was going down he hit me with a left hook as well.
“So that should have been concrete, good night Vienna.
"But the Gypsy King rose like a phoenix from the ashes off the canvas to rally back from the 12th and it was an epic round.
“We won Ring Magazine Round of the Year, so it must have been a good round.”
Fury will next be in action on September 14, taking on the unbeaten Otto Wallin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Wilder, meanwhile, will defend his heavyweight crown against Luis Ortiz, though a date and venue for their rematch has not yet been announced.
