Midsomer Murders star Neil Dudgeon recalls far-fetched plot

Midsomer Murders fans will be thrilled to learn that one beloved detective will be returning to screens today, as repeats of series 16 and 17 air.

Ten years after his exit, Detective Charlie Nelson, who was played by actor Gwilym Lee, will be back on screens alongside long-running Detective John Barnaby, played by Neil Dudgeon.

Neil has had many sidekicks over the years, including Jason Hughes, who was replaced by Gwilym, and Nick Hendrix, who was Gwilym's predecessor.

However, today (Sunday, May 17), fans will be treated to some classic episodes of Midsomer Murders, beginning with an episode from series 16 titled, The Flying Club.

The synopsis for the episode, which airs at 2.25pm, teases, "Barnaby and Nelson discover that the exciting world of stunt pilots and military heroes hides many dark secrets after the owner of Finchmere Airfield is hit on the head and dropped to his death from a plane.

"Are anti-aircraft campaigners behind Bernard King's murder, or is the incident linked to a tragic Second World War mission?"

The instalment will be followed by another episode from series 16 titled The Killings of Copenhagen

The episode summary reads, "The murder of Midsomer resident and biscuit factory boss Eric Calder leads Barnaby and Nelson to Copenhagen. The pair join forces with local detectives Birgitte Poulsen and Anna Degn in the hunt for the killer, and during the course of their investigation, they discover the businessman had numerous links to the capital."

Midsomer Murders fans will be treated to episode one from series 17, titled The Dagger Club.

Following his decision to leave the ITV drama, in April 2016, it was announced that Nick Hendrix would be joining the cast as DCI Barnaby's new sidekick, DS Jamie Winter.

While Gwilym never publicly spoke about the reason for his exit, a source reportedly told the Daily Mail at the time that the actor had left the show to pursue other acting opportunities.

DS Nelson made his final appearance in episode six of season 18. In the opening episode of season 19, it was revealed that Nelson had moved away from Midsomer to embark on an undercover course.

Midsomer Murders is available to watch from 2.25pm on ITV3.
