'Diana never wanted William to be King – she thought Harry was perfect'

Good Morning Britain hosted a furious debate about reports that the late Diana, Princess of Wales allegedly didn't want her eldest son, Prince William, to be King as he was too shy. It has been claimed she wanted her younger son, Prince Harry, to take the top job instead, and even used to refer to him as “Good King Harry". Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams and cultural commentator Ateh Jewel clashed on the issue on the ITV show.

While he believed Diana may have thought this, Fitzwilliams felt "malicious" Harry would not be up to the task. "I think Diana may well have thought it, but one has to be in mind, magical though she was in so many ways, she was also deeply emotional and very often erratic," he said.

"Tragically, at the end of her life in 1997, Harry was only 12. She couldn't tell by then, this was just an idea... I don't doubt that she possibly thought it. If we actually look at what has happened... this is one of the most high-profile jobs in the world. Harry is deeply emotional. He's traumatised by what happened to his mother. He said that, in fact, a camera click can disturb him. This would be a high-profile job that he couldn't possibly handle," he insisted.

Jewel disagreed, stating she has "been team Harry and Meghan for years". Reflecting on the possibility, she said: I think they [Harry and Meghan] represent a very diverse modern Britain.

"I'm very proud to be British. I'm very proud to be Nigerian and have Trinidadian heritage as well. This is a prince who has put his body and his blood and his life on the line in active duty, combat, for his family...

"[He has] shown huge amounts of integrity, literally protecting his wife and his family's mental health, risking them away and saving them what obviously seems quite a toxic environment.

"This is someone who has shown huge grit, resilience and steel, and I think to say he couldn't handle it is ridiculous, quite frankly, in my opinion it'd be really, really interesting, " she shot back.

An unimpressed Fitzwilliams cut in to dispute her points. "He hasn't, in point of fact, been honourable at all," he raged. "What he did - he and Meghan didn't last two years as senior working royals. They stepped down and blindsided the Queen.

"And then what did we have? We had an interview on Oprah where the Royal Family was accused of racism, of callousness. A lot of what was said was complete lies.

"Oprah didn't push, but the facts were, it was very damaging to the very institution that we're talking about.

"And also Netflix, that documentary, also damaging to the royals. And Harry showed in Spare, his memoir, he could also be very malicious," he fumed.
