Mrs Brown's Boys special most brutal reviews – 'Rather have a root canal'
Mrs Brown's Boys returned to the BBC on Christmas Day for another festive special - but fans weren't impressed.

The BBC insisted on bringing Mrs Brown’s Boys back for yet another Christmas special this year, despite many viewers begging them to “stop” airing the comedy show. Starring Brendan O’Carroll, Jennifer Gibney and Pat Shields, the Irish sitcom suffered a slump in ratings last year, being beaten out by the Gavin and Stacey finale.
(Image: BBC)While Gavin and Stacey attracted 12.3million viewers in 2024, Mrs Brown’s Boys didn’t make the top 10 most watched BBC shows last Christmas Day.
The 2025 special follows Agnes as she gathers her family to take a special Christmas portrait, while Cathy is worrying about what to buy her family and Buster is back with another of his signature Christmas trees. It will return on New Year’s Day for another special episode as Agnes and the gang prepare for an incoming storm.
So far, the reviews haven’t exactly been glowing for the festive episode. In fact, some are too brutal even to repeat here. But we’ve gathered a few of the funniest responses for your viewing pleasure.

One X user tweeted: “If there was a live performance of it in my garden, I’d shut the curtains.”
Another quipped: “I’d rather watch reruns of Nicola Sturgeon’s daily Covid briefings, that’s what I think about Mrs Brown’s Boys.”

“I was threatened by bayonet to watch it. I now have a perfect hole through my abdomen which just missed the kidney,” someone else joked.
Another social media user echoed: “I’d imagine it was like having a root canal without any anaesthetic.”

Somebody else posted: “I’d rather run a barefoot marathon over Lego.”
“Mrs Brown’s Boys: unfunny, embarrassing and inexplicably funded by a compulsory BBC licence fee. The BBC didn’t just lower the bar… it buried it,” another said.

Riffing off the recent news that Trump is seeking to sue the BBC, one said: “The BBC has RUINED Trump’s reputation. As reparations they should send him every series of Mrs Brown’s Boys on DVD!”
Someone else said: “If I could, I’d build a time machine with the sole purpose of preventing Mrs Brown’s Boys ever being put on BBC.”
A different social media user posted: “In a race to the bottom, the BBC yet again delivers its trump card in Mrs Brown’s Boys, the singularly least funny and most irritating thing I’ve ever had the misfortune to experience on TV ever.”
