Fans of ITV's latest crime drama, Protection, may be disappointed to learn that the broadcaster currently has no intention of commissioning a second series.
The six-episode drama debuted in spring 2025 and centred on Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (portrayed by Siobhan Finneran) and her demanding role within the witness protection programme.
The storyline took a dramatic twist when she became embroiled in a security breach that led to the tragic killing of a family under her care.
Hailed by some as the 'next Line of Duty', the programme explored themes of institutional corruption, organised crime networks, and profound distrust within law enforcement, earning widespread acclaim from viewers.
One viewer enthused: "A Gripping Must-Watch Drama. ITV has delivered one of its best dramas yet with Protection, a tense, fast-paced thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

"With its compelling storytelling, unexpected twists, and stellar performances, this series is nothing short of a masterpiece."
Meanwhile, another viewer added: "Great storyline with plenty of twists. Acting was excellent. I hope there is a season 2."
Yet despite the show's popularity, it appears a follow-up series isn't on the cards for the foreseeable future, reports the Mirror.
An ITV representative confirmed: "Protection was a great success, reaching over 8 million viewers.

"While there are no current plans to continue Liz Nyles' story, we're continuing to work closely with New Pictures on developing new drama projects in this area."
Viewers would have also spotted familiar faces such as Katherine Kelly, Ace Bhatti, Andrew Knott and Catherine Tyldesley among the cast.
Reflecting on her time on the show, Siobhan shared what initially drew her to the role.
She revealed to ITV: "When I read the first episode, within minutes, there's a big event, a major disaster that draws you in immediately.
"From early on you're ready to go on a journey with Liz to find out what's going on.
"It's a great hook and the story is so complex. It's fascinating to me that a writer can fit all that together and it still makes sense at the end."
Protection is available to watch on ITVX.
