Game of Thrones fans have branded 2026 a “great year” after a filming update. The beloved franchise is getting yet another spin-off series soon, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R. R. Martin’s The Tales of Dunk and Egg, set to air on HBO next year.

After being affected by the writers’ strikes, fans have been eagerly awaiting news surrounding the prequel series.

It follows Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall, the future Commander of the Kingsguard) and Egg (the future King Aegon V Targaryen), and is set in between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, around 100 years before the stories of Jon Snow and Arya Stark.

After initial reports surrounding the series left fans gutted when it was claimed it would only consist of six episodes around 30 minutes long, a new piece of information has kept hopes high.

HBO CEO Casey Bloy confirmed at the 2025 Emmy Awards that there really isn’t long to wait, as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is in the post-production phase and will be released in January.

He also shared that House of the Dragon season three will premiere a few months later, meaning two series set in Westeros will air in the same year for the first time ever.

“A proper Westeros binge year,” one fan wrote on X, while another said: “We’re so back!”

“Two spin offs in one year is crazy, binge fatigue incoming,” one fan commented.

“It’s been too long,” someone else wrote, and another added: “SOOOO READY OMG cannot wait.”

“Helllll yes,” one fan said, as another wrote: “Used to pray for times like these fr.”

“2026 is looking great for entertainment,” another wrote.

It was earlier claimed that the series has already been renewed for a second and third season, following the second and third novellas of the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms volume.

HBO executive Francesca Orsi previously shared: “We’re already planning on how do we build this for the three seasons in total. We’re not picking it up officially, but it’s looking very good. We’re looking at it as a holistic piece, Seasons 2 and 3, because there’s three novellas.”

George R. R. Martin also shared his support for the upcoming series, writing on his blog: “I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm. and Tanselle Too-Tall.“

He added: “It’s as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject).”

The synopsis for the first season, titled The Hedge Knight, teases: “The tale is based around characters affectionately known as ‘Dunk and Egg’ – Ser Duncan the Tall, a young but courageous knight, while Egg is his small-in-stature young squire.

“Together the pair are wandering Westeros. This time period is a state of change for the Seven Kingdoms. While the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne, they are now without dragons.

“While the last dragon is still within living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits await these two unlikely heroes.”

The novel was released in 1998, with the second, The Sworn Sword in 2003 and the final of the trio, The Mystery Knight, in 2010.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is set to air on HBO in 2026.
