The celebrated author disclosed that the upcoming book will conclude the series that has captivated fans for years.
Ann Cleeves dropped the unexpected revelation about DCI Stanhope's fate during her appearance at the Bath Literature Festival, stating: "There will only be one more Vera novel," subsequently hinting with a playful comment: "But I probably won't kill her off!"
Adding a dose of drama, Ann quipped: "Well, that was a bombshell, wasn't it?"

Earlier this year, Brenda Blethyn's final portrayal as Vera Stanhope left fans in tears but also revealed the actress's aspiration to dedicate more time to her family, despite her openness to reprise the iconic role for a special feature in the future.

The actress confessed, "It was a lovely summer back in 2023, and I came to realise I hadn't had a summer with my husband for 14 years," reflecting on the time spent away from her loved ones.
She added, "Naturally, I missed my family, and my dog Jack, although he was with me in the North East."
Despite enjoying the company of her co-stars, she admitted, "But working all day meant our time together was short. I love my Vera family, but I love my other family too."
