Ruth Jones gives huge Gavin and Stacey update – and it's happening this year
EXCLUSIVE: Ruth Jones has confirmed a brand-new Gavin and Stacey project is coming this year - and it's packed with never-before-heard secrets.

Ruth Jones says 'I really hope' to write with James Corden again
Gavin and Stacey fans, get ready – because Ruth Jones has just dropped a major update about the iconic series, and it’s arriving later this year. The beloved actress and writer, 58, became emotional as she thanked the entire Gavin and Stacey team before making a touching tribute to her longtime friend and co-creator, James Corden, 46. And while the pair have repeatedly said the show is over, they’re reuniting in a new way this October – with the release of their upcoming book When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between: A Story of Love and Friendship.
“I love working with James. I often say he’s like my annoying younger brother and I’m like his very bossy older sister, but it just seems to work,” Ruth smiled. “We have such a good laugh together and I hope that continues now Gavin and Stacey is finished.” While fans may still be holding out hope for another TV special, the book promises to deliver plenty of nostalgia and behind-the-scenes revelations.

It charts the journey from the duo’s original pitch to the final emotional day on set, telling the “full extraordinary story of how they turned their little show into a full-on cultural phenomenon.”
As well as reliving the challenges, rejections, and iconic moments – including Nessa and Smithy’s unforgettable Christmas proposal – the book explores Ruth and James’s own real-life friendship, described as “a magical relationship of mutual support” fuelled by a “shared sense of subversive fun.”
It’s packed with “revelations and never-before-heard stories,” and paints a vivid picture of how the duo bounced off each other at every stage of the journey, creating something that’s now firmly cemented in British TV history.
Beyond the book, Ruth is keeping busy on screen too. She revealed: “I’m working on an adaptation of the Harlan Coben novel Run Away for Netflix, I’m having a great time.
“I play a private investigator who used to be in the police. She’s a great character and it’s so different for me.

"Another genre I’d like to appear in is a good period drama. I’d have loved to be in The Crown,” she said.
Ruth added: “I think I’d say I enjoy writing and acting the same. I’m very fortunate to do all of them, and I get a variety of work, which is a great privilege. Writing-wise now, what I’d really like to do is write a film script.”
So while Gavin and Stacey may be finished for now, fans can look forward to a heartfelt new chapter when the book lands in October – and maybe even more from Ruth and James in the future.
Outside of the hit show, MBE Ruth also created and co-wrote several series of Stella for Sky TV, for which she was BAFTA nominated. Other TV work includes Hattie, Nighty Night and Saxondale.
In 2024 Ruth played Mother Superior in Sister Act the Musical at London's Dominion Theatre. Her latest acting role is Elena Ravenscrott in Harlan Coben's Run Away for Netflix.
