BBC One has come under fire for its scheduling decisions, as two of the biggest sporting events of the year happen to fall on the same day.

Some sports fans have been unimpressed to see that, despite the momentous occasion, the channel appears to have somewhat persevered with its regular programming.

BBC’s Countryfile, which traditionally airs later on Sunday evening, was rescheduled to fall earlier in the day at 5.10pm.

However, the big schedule shake-up wasn’t enough to satisfy some viewers, with some expressing their amazement that Countryfile could air on BBC One at the time of one of British sport’s biggest finals.

This evening, Wimbledon Tennis is airing its high-profile final matches, including the Gentlemen’s Singles and the Mixed Doubles.

Later tonight at 8pm, England’s football team is also set to go head-to-head with Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin.

Despite these massive sporting events, Countryfile continues to air on BBC One right up until BBC News briefly takes over at 6.10pm, before giving way to Match of the Day Live at 6.30pm. Meanwhile, Wimbledon 2024 will air solely on BBC Two.

Taking to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, sports fans expressed their frustration at the scheduling decision.

“Seriously… BBC… you’re showing Countryfile and not Wimbledon!!??? What about the mixed doubles final?? #Wimbledon #BBCTennis,” one angry fan wrote. (sic)

“5:30 on the day of the Euros final and this pubs got f***ing Countryfile on. god help us man,” another person groaned. (sic)

“@bbctennis has not had a good #Wimbledon. Castle, trails for the @BBCiPlayer

during sets, constant switching between BBCs 1&2, and now moving from One to allow for Countryfile. Time for another broadcaster to have a go,” a third viewer advised. (sic)

While one more quipped: “Not seen one second of Wimbledon. Is that match still going on from a few years ago? Trust the BBC to put Countryfile to get you in the mood for the match...should just start the build up now really.” (sic)

While other viewers praised this week’s episode, writing in: “Important Program with social, economic discussed issues in Modern UK needs highlighting. Number of young farmers leaving land is staggering. High summer and Aldi Spring Onions from Senegal! Staggering!!” (sic)

Another added: “Excellent piece about rope manufacturing from UK wool. We need to be using more natural materials in the marine environment, to stop microplastics going into the sea and our food chain. Great innovation.” (sic)

Catch Countryfile next Sunday at 7pm on BBC One.
