BBC quiz show host Richard Osman sent fans of his book series The Thursday Murder Club wild yesterday after sharing a first look at the cast in Netflix’s new adaptation. The Pointless creator has since issued one big clarification, as some fans were mistaken about who had written the film version.

Osman, 53, released his debut novel with Penguin Random House back in 2020. Netflix has since confirmed that they are adapting the star’s book into a film, which will feature a star-studded cast.

Yesterday, the streaming platform sent fans wild as they revealed production had started, sharing a first look at the cast. Taking to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Netflix penned: "The Thursday Murder Club is officially in production!

"Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie will star in the film adaptation of @richardosman’s bestselling novel, directed by Chris Columbus." Other cast members include David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Jonathan Pryce, Richard E Grant, Danny Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Sarah Niles.

The new on-set snap from the movie, which began filming on June 27, shows the four leads dressed in character and gathered around Osman. They appear to be on the set of the retirement home's games room, which is where the characters meet up every Thursday to solve cases in his original story.

Yesterday, Osman appeared very chuffed by the first-look snap, re-tweeting it to his 1.2 million followers with the caption: “Very first look at the Thursday Murder Club gang!!!” (sic)

However, he has since felt the need to clear up a few details around the production following an outpouring of support from fans on social media.

This morning, one fan named Mat excitedly tweeted: “I can’t really fathom what it must feel like to know this lot (and David Tennant and Richard E Grant) are going to speak words you’ve written. Congratulations @richardosman.” (sic)

In a refreshingly humble response, Richard then explained to fans that he is not actually responsible for the show’s script.

He wrote: “I should point out that I didn't write the film, but the thrill remains the same #TheThursdayMurderClubMovie.” (sic)

In fact, the upcoming film will actually be coming from the mind of Chris Columbus, who is behind hits like Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two Harry Potter films.

Taking to the comments section, Richard’s fans were quick to compliment the author on the strength of his original story.

Anita pointed out: “Yeah but you wrote the foundation. the book this is based on. Oh I do hope it stays as close to the book as possible, and they don't muck about with the characters, they are perfectly written.” (sic)

Andy penned: “Even if you haven't written the screenplay, it's based on what you've created. Hopefully you had some input/control over what those characters say & do on screen & let's not forget Spielberg must have seen something he liked in order to get the rights.” (sic)

Amanda added: “Richard, whoever wrote the actual words that comes out of their mouth at the end of the day, everything is totally inspired by you and the whole production will be full of your heart and soul! Congratulations! Brilliant achievement!” (sic)
