Sophie Thompson, who appeared on Coronation Street as the clairvoyant Rosemary Piper for a few months in 2018, joyfully recalled her time on the soap while reflecting on her star-studded career.

Although she’d had many Hollywood roles before her guest appearance in Corrie, the 62-year-old couldn’t help but be starstruck when she became surrounded by the legendary cast and iconic set.

Speaking to Alan Titchmarsh on his Sunday morning ITV show, the actress recalled feeling much more relaxed when one icon, Sue Nicholls, sparked some chaos for the day of filming.

She gushed: “Sue Nicholls just has funny bones and even the nerves got overrun by the fact that she just made me laugh…I couldn’t stop laughing!

“They had to give us a bit of a break because we were both in pieces.”

However, the moment did weigh heavily on the London-born star, as she explained: “When you’re a guest and you’re not there for very long you’re very conscious about not rocking the boat.”

Having worked across a number of iconic films, TV shows and streaming platforms, the actress has had a brush with countless celebrities and admitted it’s one aspect of her work she truly enjoys.

Sophie shared: “You’re always learning and working with good people is what you want to be doing. Just being in their midst and watching them work, hopefully something rubs off.”

While both Sophie and her sister, Emma Thompson, have achieved worldwide fame in their own regards, their critics still claim the pair’s theatrical family is to thank for their acting renown.

The Detectorists star gleefully praised her parents, actress Phyllida Law and director Eric Thompson, as “groundbreakers” in that regard.

The actress explained that they were the first in their own families to delve into the entertainment industry full time, but insinuated that this didn’t have much impact on her or her sister’s upbringing or career choices.

Sophie highlighted: “When it’s what your mum and dad do, it’s just what they do.

“Now of course it’s very particular and vivid in my heart, but then it was just what Dad did and I would help him in the office.”

Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh airs Sundays from 9.30am on ITV and ITVX.
