DEBATE: Should police use water cannons on rioters?
THE use of water cannon to tackle the rioting mobs on the streets of Britain was last night ruled out by the Home Office.
The high-pressure spray has been used to control crowds in Northern Ireland, but senior police officers have never used it on mainland Britain.
A spokesman said: "Water cannons are not approved for use on the mainland by the Home Office.
