DEBATE: Does Labour treat pensioners with contempt
THE Government has been accused of insulting pensioners with a Christmas bonus of just £10 – the same amount they got when the payment was introduced nearly 40 years ago.
Underlining a dramatic fall in its real buying power, the £10 first paid in 1972 by then Tory Prime Minister Ted Heath would be worth £98 in today’s money.

Liberal Democrat work and pension spokesman Steve Webb, who uncovered the facts through Parliamentary Questions, said: “The measly Christmas bonus is a slap in the face for today’s pensioners.
“What was once a valuable additional benefit is now nothing more than a joke."
