Terry: Rooney for captain
JOHN Terry has backed Wayne Rooney, who replaced him as captain in Doha, to become his long-term successor in the skipper’s role.
Terry, who was ruled out with an ankle injury, was impressed with the way Rooney adapted to the captaincy role and said: “Wayne has been different class. He has really matured as a player. We’ve spoken about that for a few years now and he fully deserved it.
“He has been brilliant, he was good in the dressing room beforehand and it was good to see. I want it [the captaincy] back but, long-term, Wayne is a candidate.
“He has got so much experience. He was probably the most capped player in the squad. He has a lot of experience on young shoulders.”
Terry insists the long trip to Qatar was a worthwhile exercise even with an injury-hit squad.
He added: “It was a good chance for us to come away and see what we are up against coming into the World Cup.”
