Business Secretary Mandelson, who is also the First Secretary of State, is expected to stay in St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington overnight.

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) said: “Lord Mandelson has entered St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington this morning for a routine operation to deal with a benign condition of the prostate.”

It is not the first time Lord Mandelson has received treatment at St Mary’s hospital.

In October 2008, shortly after sensationally rejoining the Cabinet, he was treated for kidney stones after being taken to the hospital complaining of abdominal pain.

The 55-year-old has no other reported history of medical problems.

The former MP for Hartlepool had been serving as EU trade commissioner, having twice resigned as a minister under Tony Blair.

His profile has grown steadily since his return, culminating in him being given an expanded department and the title of First Secretary of State in Mr Brown’s June reshuffle.
