From Superman to Shrek
FOR a Prime Minister facing a national debt crisis, what better gift than a DVD of a film called The Pawnbroker?
Is that what Barack Obama was thinking when he presented Gordon Brown with a collection of 25 classic American movies?
The 1965 film wasn’t the only title that seemed strangely appropriate for the embattled PM. Among the others said to be in the boxed set were Deliverance, The Terminator and The Invisible Man.
The last was especially apt as the New York Times yesterday relegated Mr Brown’s speech to Congress to page 12 – two weeks after Jade Goody made the paper’s front page.
Downing Street last night refused to discuss the President’s gift to mark Mr Brown’s visit to Washington.
It was also thought to include The Asphalt Jungle from 1950. But there was no sign of Shrek, featuring one Scottish ogre.
