Caribbean rioters storm town hall
Rioters shot at police and stormed a town hall in a third night of violence on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.
Weeks of strikes by workers demanding higher salaries and lower prices degenerated into clashes this week.
A union activist was killed on Tuesday, apparently by rioters, raising the pressure on the central government in Paris.
Police were helicoptered in to dislodge youths who had forced their way into Sainte Rose town hall overnight. Getting officers there by road was too difficult because of barricades that protesters have been erecting during weeks of strikes.
Rioters shot at gendarmes in the tourist resort town of Gosier, and at least five stores or restaurants were set ablaze in a few towns overnight.
Thousands of tourists have cancelled holidays to Guadeloupe and Martinique. The protests and strikes have hurt scores of businesses, including restaurants, hotels and car rental agencies during the islands' peak winter tourist season.
While unrest continued in Guadeloupe, government officials met overnight in Paris to find solutions. Prime Minister Francois Fillon announced a plan that includes extra government benefits that would total nearly £175 extra a month for low-income workers.
