Huge landslide on Italy Switzerland border: 8 missing, 100 evacuated and homes devastated
A HUGE landslide on the border between Italy and Switzerland has left eight people missing, forced the evacuation of 100 people and left homes devastated.

The landslide struck in Bondo in Switzerland, close to the Italian province of Sondrio on Wednesday.
Graubunden police said: “In the region of Val Bondasca, eight people who were there at the time of the landslide have not been found.”
It is thought that the missing people include German, Austrian and Swiss citizens.

The landslide has left a huge mass of debris in its wake after it sent mud, rocks and dirt into the village of Bondo.
The Swiss Air Rescue Helicopter has rescued hikers trapped by the landslide.
The mayor of Bregaglia said: “The geologist had advised us to activate security measures, which we did.
“But nobody expected that the landslide would fall so soon and with such magnitude.”

The landslide has caused villages to be evacuated
Police said 12 farm buildings, including barns and stables, had been destroyed by the flow of debris.
The area is prone to landslides and the authorities are constanly monitoring the threat.
The landslide happened on the Piz Cengalo and produced rubble and mud that travelled at speed down the Bondasca valley.
