Centre-left politician Macron told the French people it was in the USA’s interests to maintain good relations with the European Union, adding that he hoped that he would be able to bring Donald Trump “to his senses” and make him reconsider his decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord.
France’s newly elected head of state invited Mr Trump to attend the Bastille Day parade on July 14 – France’s independence day – to celebrate the arrival 100 years ago of the American troops who fought alongside the French in World War One.
Mr Macron said that he had extended an invitation to his American counterpart to show the world that the two leaders were seeking to bolster ties despite their differences over climate change.
He said: “Donald Trump’s trip to Paris will enable us to re-anchor the Franco-American relationship which is both deep and special.

“I invited him to the Bastille Day parade because I think that France needs to maintain an intense political dialogue with the US.”
The 39-year-old added that European leaders would all be reaffirming their commitment to the Paris climate accord at the G20 summit in Germany next week.

Mr Macron said that he hoped that he would be able to bring climate change sceptics “to their senses,” a thinly veiled reference to Mr Trump’s shock decision to withdraw the US from the historic global deal under which more than 190 countries – bar Syria, Nicaragua and the US – pledged to curb greenhouse gas emissions in a bid to fight global warming.
Mr Trump, for his part, is “keen to reaffirm the strong bond between France and the United States” during his first official trip to Paris, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday.
