Sadeq al-Husseini, head of the security committee in Iraqqi Diyala provincial council, said: “Confirmed information showed the death of the mastermind of ‘Ramadan invasion’ in Diyala in an airstrike near Hawija.
“IS [Daesh] attempted through the ‘Ramadan invasion’ to destabilise security in some Diyala cities including Baqubah through sending 11 suicide bombers who infiltrated from Hawija toward Mutaibija then toward the province to carry out crimes and kill the innocent.”
He added that the invasion “failed in Diyala, thanks to security efforts”.
In late May it was reported that ISIS had urged its supporters to carry out attacks during Ramadan.
The label “Ramadan invasion” refers specifically to planned ISIS attacks in four Iraqi provinces during the month of Ramadan.

ISIS holds key regions in Iraq that link between Diyala, Salahuddin and Kirkuk.
Earlier this week, the terror group blew up the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in their Iraqi defacto capital Mosul.
Iraq’s prime minister afterwards said ISIS’ destruction of the 800-year-old mosque was an admission that the group was facing defeat.

But ISIS’ Amaq news agency blamed the destruction of the mosque on an airstrike by the US-led coalition.
The US-led coalition, however, denied the claim.
Russia’s foreign ministry also claimed on Thursday there was a high degree of certainty ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a Russian airstrike in Raqqa.
