Mr Tillerson met with Chinese officials for the inaugural summit earlier today, where the talks were focused on curtailing North Korea’s nuclear program.
The Chinese side was represented by State Councillor Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui, chief of the People’s Liberation Army’s Joint Staff department.
The summit replaced the original “strategic track” of the previous US-China Diplomatic and Security Dialogue during the presidency of Barack Obama, between 2009 and 2016.
It also takes place just a day after President Donald Trump said Chinese efforts to curb Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions were not adequate enough.
"While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi & China to help with North Korea, it has not worked out. At least I know China tried!" Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.
The US was expected to press China for more cooperation on the matter but also look at issues surrounding counter-terrorism and territorial rivalries in the South China Sea.

Mr Trump has been escalating his disdain towards the North Korean hermit state since the death of 22-year-old student Otto Warmbier on Monday June 19.
The American student was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour in North Korea last year after eh attempted to steal a propaganda poster.
But the student who fell in a coma sometime after being imprisoned, was returned home after a successful diplomatic mission.
Preliminary examinations concluded that he had suffered “severe brain damage” but the cause of death remains unknown.
His grieving family rejected a full body autopsy and publicly blamed the “brutality” of the North Korean regime for their son’s death
