The source, who has chosen to remain anonymous, said the US president shunned diplomacy and was instead “loud and tacky”.
The State Department official spoke out as Donald Trump returned from a chaotic first foreign trip, where he caused controversy and upset across two continents.
The source said: “When it comes to diplomacy, President Trump is a drunk tourist.

The source told US publication Daily Beast: “One hundred and ninety-five nations never agree on anything, so when they do, accepting the measure should be easy. The United States needs to be out front on this pact.”
He said pulling out of the agreement, which was heralded as the most important global decision on climate change, would be “an abdication of American leadership”.
The US official said Mr Trump lacked subtlety
Mr Trump courted controversy on his trip abroad, beginning with a controversial arms deal with Saudi Arabia.
He then travelled to Israel where a jaunty message left at the Holocaust Museum, in which he said the trip “with all my friends” was “so amazing” was criticised.

Finally he arrived in Europe where he was filmed shoving the prime minister of Montenegro out of the way in order to be better placed for a photoshoot.
He also told EU leaders Germany was “bad, really bad”, leading Angela Merkel to conceded Europe could “no longer rely” on America as a partner.

Along the way there was also awkward photo shoots with French president Emmanuel Macron and Pope Francis.
Mr Trump’s approval rating is now at 39.4 per cent - it took five years for George W Bush to reach this level of unpopularity.
