British climber dies on Andes peak
A British mountain climber died of a heart attack just steps from the summit of the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has confirmed.
A spokeswoman for the FCO said Michael Freeman, 42, died on Mount Aconcagua in the Argentine Andes on Friday.
She said next of kin had been informed, but could not confirm whereabouts in the UK Mr Freeman or his family were based.
Park chief Pablo Perello told reporters Mr Freeman collapsed while approaching the 22,000-foot (6,700-metre) peak of the mountain.
He was the third person to die on the mountain since Wednesday, when a blizzard-triggered avalanche killed an Italian climber and fatally injured her Argentine guide.
About 4,600 people tried to reach Aconcagua's summit during the 2007-2008 climbing season.
Local guides said two to three people usually die scaling the mountain every year.
