US President Donald Trump has sent a message of sympathy to the Russians
At least 10 people were killed and more than 50 injured in the blast which took place on a train travelling between Sennaya Ploschad station and Tekhnologichesky Institute station.
Authorities closed all St. Petersburg metro stations following the attack.
The Moscow metro said it was taking unspecified additional security measures in case of an attack there.
When asked about the blast following a meeting today, Mr Trump told reporters that it was a "terrible thing - happening all over the world - absolutely a terrible thing."

Russia has been the target of attacks by Chechen militants in past years and their leaders have frequently threatened further attacks.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Russian authorities believe it was an act of terrorism.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is currently in St Petersburg on a visit, expressed his condolences and said a terror attack would be considered "first of all".
He said: "The causes of this event have not been determined yet, so it’s too early to talk about possible causes.
"The investigation will show. Certainly, we will consider all variants, common, criminal, first of all, of a terrorist nature."
Mr Trump’s message of condolence came at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and the Kremlin.
Putin aide Dmitry Peskov said relations between the two superpowers were now "even worse" than during the Cold War era.
He said: "New Cold War? Maybe even worse, taking into account actions of the present presidential administration in Washington.”
It comes as Mr Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, has offered to testify before congressional committees probing potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
