Today, Mr Obama will wake up in the White House for the final time. He will likely start the morning by writing a letter to leave on the Oval Office desk, as is traditional.
These president-to-president letters are usually kept private for many years, and are a chance for the outgoing leader to impart wisdom and wish his successor good luck.
Last year, the heartfelt note that George HW Bush wrote to Bill Clinton on the morning of his 1993 inauguration went viral when it was shared online.

Mr Bush wished his successor “great happiness” and said: “Your success now is our country’s success. I am rooting hard for you.”
Shortly before the inauguration ceremony, the Obamas will host Mr and Mrs Trump for afternoon tea.
Meanwhile, Mr Obama’s daughters Malia, 18 and Sasha, 15, might show Mr Trump’s son Barron around the White House, possibly joined by the elder Trump children Ivanka, Eric, Donald Jr and Tiffany.
Mr Obama has already met with Mr Trump to discuss the transfer of power
When the Obamas arrived in Washington in 2009, George W Bush’s daughters Barbara and Jenny showed Sasha and Malia around their new home, and left them their own note with some personal advice.
Last week, Barbara and Jenna wrote another letter to the Obama girls wishing them luck for their future as former First Children.
In the late morning, Mr Obama and his family will leave the White House for the final time to escort the Trumps to the inauguration ceremony.
Mr Trump’s inauguration at noon local time (5pm GMT) will be an emotional moment for Mr Obama because it marks the end of his time in office.

After the events are over the Obamas will travel to Palm Springs, California, for a post-inauguration holiday.
Press secretary Josh Earnest announced the trip during his final press briefing on Tuesday and said: “Mr Obama and his family have enjoyed the time they spent there in the past, and they’re looking forward to traveling there on Friday.”
On their return to Washington, the Obamas will settle in to their new home in the nearby Washington suburb of Kalorama.
Mr and Mrs Obama reportedly plan to remain in the capital while Sasha completes high school.
