Manson was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1971 in what prosecutors said was part of a plot to incite racial war between whites and blacks.
Phrases such as “death to pigs” and "healter skelter” were scrawled in blood at the scene of the crimes in a desperate bid to stoke racial tensions.
Cult leader Manson was originally sentenced to death for his role in organising the killings but was spared execution after the state of California outlawed the penalty.

Since being incarcerated in 1971, Manson has been rejected parole 12 times.
His next hearing for parole is scheduled for 2027.
