‘Doomsday’ arrives in devastated Aleppo as Syrian army recaptures city
ALEPPO was facing “doomsday” today as Syrian government troops recaptured almost every inch of rebel territory.

Dead and wounded civilians were lying in the streets of the city as Russian jets carried out bombing raids and rebels fought President Bashar Assad’s forces.
Assad’s generals claimed to have hemmed in opposition fighters by retaking 98 per cent of land on the eastern side of the city.
Aid groups said 500 children are trapped in rebel-held districts and more than 500 civilians have been killed in the past month.

One witness, English teacher Abdul Kafi Alhamado, said: “The situation inside the eastern part of Aleppo is doomsday.
"Bombs are everywhere, people are running, people are injured in the streets. No one can help them. Some people are under the rubble.”
The Syrian government claims to be in control of 98 per cent of the city
Lieutenant General Zaid al-Saleh, head of Assad’s war committee, said: “The battle in eastern Aleppo should end quickly. The rebels don’t have much time. They either have to surrender or die.”
The conflict has pitched Assad’s forces – backed by Moscow’s warplanes and Iran-sponsored Shi’ite militias – against a mixed group of rebels.

There were clashes in the districts of Fardous and Karam al-Daadaa yesterday, after Assad’s forces earlier capture of Sheikh Saeed.
