The Republican maverick called the Hungarian leader on Thursday night, praising the country’s citizens as “brave freedom fighters”.
Mr Orban, who has been a thorn in the side of European Union leaders such as Angela Merkel, is one of the first EU politicians to come out in support of the US President-in-waiting.

The hardline leader also talked of his excitement when he learned of the result of the election.
He said he was “electrified” as “the era of liberal non-democracy is over”.
