US election 2016: When do polls close and when will exit polls come out?
THE US election will decide if Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton will become the next President of the US. But what time do polls close and when will exit polls come out?
Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will be the next President of the US
Americans will vote on Tuesday November 8, with polls opening across the states between 11am and 5pm GMT.
Voting will close between midnight and 6am. Exit polls will be taken throughout the day and results will be announced immediately after voting ends.
Exit polls from Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia will come in at 12am GMT.
The first major bellweather states North Carolina and Ohio will come half an hour later, along with West Virginia. These two swing states could provide a good indication as to who will win the election.
Florida and Pennsylvania are next at 1am along with 15 other states. The battleground states have a combined total of 49 electoral college votes which could decide who will be the next President.
Arkansas will follow at 1.30am, and at 2am voting will close in 13 more states including New York – the state where Trump was born and raised and where Clinton served as senator.
New York traditionally votes Democrat and is expected to back Clinton. Iowa, another key swing state, will close at 3am, along with Montana, Nevada and Utah.
California, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon and Washington close at 4am, with the final poll coming in from Alaska at 6am.
