Flights to and from the UK were cancelled as 120mph winds caused devastation in the Sunshine State.
Haiti – the poorest country in the region and still struggling to recover from a massive earthquake six years ago – endured torrential rain and 145mph winds.
Help and emergency supplies have been slow to reach towns and villages around its remote peninsula, while towns and fishing villages were torn apart and swept away.

Britain last night pledged to give up to £5million of initial aid to provide temporary shelters, water purification kits and solar lights.
The National Hurricane Centre says the eye of Matthew will continue to move near or over the coast of northeast Florida and Georgia through tonight, and near or over the coast of South Carolina on Saturday.
