Was this footballer spooked by a GHOST? Midfielder leaps into air METRES away from rival
THIS is the moment a footballer leapt into the air and fell to the ground in a heap - prompting bizarre internet claims he was struck down by a GHOST.
Brazilian footballer trips mysteriously over nothing
The commentator was left in stitches by the odd fall before managing to tell viewers at the end of his laughing fit: “Hilarious. He’s fallen over. He’s fouled himself.”
The outlandish incident happened during a weekend match between Club de Regatas Brasil (CRB) from Maceio, in Alagoas, eastern Brazil, and bitter rivals Centro Sportive Alagoana (CSA).
The unnamed CRB midfielder tripped over as he made a second-half incursion into the opponent’s half.
He had the ball at his feet and was several metres away from his nearest rival when he went to ground after a theatrical leap in the air.
It sparked a CSA counter-attack which fortunately for the embarrassed CRB player, did not end in a goal.
A paper in neighbouring Argentina, Brazil’s main regional rival on the football field, launched a hilarious readers’ poll with the question: “How much did you laugh at the Brazilian’s move?”
Nearly 5,000 people had already taken part in the online poll by this morning.
The footballer appears to trip over absolutely nothing
Football fans dubbed the fall "extraordinary" on social media
Football fans dubbed the fall “extraordinary” on social media sites with several claiming the player had been touched by the hand of a ghost.
One, implying CRB’s number six was working on batteries, joked: “Error. Number 6 has stopped working.”
As well as the fall, the match on Sunday also made headlines because of a violent clash between rival supporters at the end of the game.
Manic fighting between the two sets of fans spilled onto the pitch after veteran striker Neto Baiano scored a 92-minute winner for his side to give CRB a 1-0 win.
