Fears that World Trade Centre is on FIRE as 'smoke' billows from top of building
NEW Yorkers last night feared the World Trade Centre was on fire after what appeared to be smoke billowed from the top of the building.
It is not yet known what caused the strange cloud
Twitter user Jamie Slade shared an image of the strange cloud at the top of the skyscraper, writing: "Is the World Trade Centre on fire?"
And Manhattan-based Nick Orlando told his followers: "Fire on top of the Freedom Tower [the tower's old name] right now."
But fire officials played down the fears, tweeting: "We can confirm that there is no fire to report at the WTC."
It's lit up by the tower lights – it just looks like smoke
The cloud was reportedly caused by a steam release as part of routine maintenance, but this has not been confirmed.
A construction supervisor on the scene told a local newspaper: "It's lit up by the tower lights.
"It happens with fog and even clouds. It just looks like smoke."

Construction at One World Trade Centre began in April 2006 and finished in late 2013.
A number of memorials to the September 11 attacks have been built including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the Flight 93 National Memorial.
The latter, built in Pennsylvania, marks the crash site of the United Airlines Flight 93.
The memorial was built to mark the passengers and crew who stopped a fourth plane hijacked by terrorists reaching its target.
