Death toll passes 1,000 in Iraq carnage
THE Sunni Muslim militant rebels’ offensive in Iraq has left more than 1,000 people dead, it emerged yesterday.
The UN says the death toll from the three-week campaign is 1,075, with a similar number injured.
Casualties include those killed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and prisoners killed by government troops.
The carnage has created a humanitarian crisis, with the UN estimating one million Iraqis have been made homeless.

Details emerged as government troops battled ISIS for control of the country’s biggest oil refinery, in Baiji.
Fighting raged as US Secretary of State John Kerry flew to Erbil to urge Kurdish leaders to help form a new government that cuts across ethnic factions and includes both Sunnis and Kurds.
