We must protect women better, says India's PM
INDIA’S Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wants better protection for women in a country where more than 30 million violent assaults – including gang rapes and acid attacks – are already before the courts.
Tougher sentences have been introduced but Mr Singh said yesterday, after hearing of Sarah’s murder, that suspects should be put on trial quicker, adding: “A great deal more needs to be done.”
A 23-year-old student died in December after being gang-raped on a bus in Delhi and last month a Swiss woman suffered the same fate as she and her husband camped in a remote region.
Two weeks ago, Londoner Jessica Davies, 31, survived a leap from a hotel balcony in Agra after she feared being sexually assaulted.
