Six killed as Italy is rocked by big earthquake
THESE scenes of devastation followed a huge earthquake yesterday in northern Italy which killed six people and injured 50.
Thousands ran into streets in nightclothes as the first tremor struck at 2am in the medieval town of Modena.
A 106-year-old woman was killed in her bed by a falling roof beam.
The 6.0 magnitude quake was the strongest to hit Italy in three years. scores of historic buildings were destroyed – the bell tower of Finale emilia’s town hall looked as it had been hit with a wrecking ball.

A 5.1 magnitude aftershock caused a tower in San Felice sul Panaro to collapse.
Italian authorities estimate 3,000 people are homeless. The epicentre was in plains near Modena but the tremors were felt in France and Slovenia.
Three night workers were killed – with the mother of one saying: “He wasn’t supposed to be there. he changed shifts with a friend.”
