With anti-tourism protests sweeping across popular holiday hotspots around Europe, travellers are now seeking out quieter and less popular areas around the continent for their summer getaways.

In fitting with this trend is Riviera Travel, the UK’s leading river cruise and tour operator, who have compiled a list based off tourism statistics by EuroStat in order to uncover Europe’s top 10 least visited countries.

Luxembourg

Often overlooked by tourists when deciding on a holiday destination, Luxembourg has only had tourists spending 3.4 million nights there. For reference, Spain is the most visited, with tourists spending 484.9 million nights.

Nestled between Belgium, France and Germany, this hidden gem is an ideal location to escape the holiday bustle. Its streets are lined with rich medieval history, framed against a backdrop of beautiful scenery. If looking to take in some of the country, try a cruise across the Moselle River, which allows you to immerse yourself in the views of the country.

Latvia

Another underrated location full of medieval history is Latvia, particularly capital Riga. The city contains an abundance of Gothic architecture and a thriving and vibrant arts scene.

Estonia

Take a wander through the colourful old town of Tallinn, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where cobblestone streets lead you through historic architecture and landmarks that transport you to another era.
