A massive new airport is being built in the Philippines and will draw 80 million visitors to the capital Manila every year.

Sangley Airport is currently used for domestic flights, but will be redeveloped into an impressive international airport.

Located just south of Manila in Cavite City, Sangley will serve as an international gateway to the capital. The £8.4 bn project will begin construction later this year and is expected to take four years, launching operations in 2028.

The runway will allow the airport to accommodate a whopping 25 million passengers per year.

A second runway will eventually bring the total to 75 million, allowing Sangley to contend with major European hubs like Heathrow, which serves 80 million yearly visitors.

For years, the project was stalled after the Cavite provincial government announced in 2021 that a deal with Chinese investors had failed.

But earlier this year, the Sangley Point International Airport (SPIA) Development Consortium won a bid for the work, led by tycoons Lucio Tan and Helen Yuchengco-Dee, and investment banker Luis Virata.

The development is also backed by tech giant Samsung and London-based engineering firm Arup Group.

The project is expected to generate 50,000 jobs and promote trade and economic development for the area.

Sangley will become the third international airport feeding Manila, alongside NAIA and the under-construction New Manila Airport in Bulacan.

The ambitious development plans come as the Philippines see soaring tourist numbers, and travellers are increasingly seeking out the island nation as a prime holiday destination.
