India is looking to embark on a massive investment in high-speed rail, as it seeks to bring greater connectivity and economic prosperity to the country.

A new bullet train connecting Ahmedabad-Mumbai is scheduled to start running in July 2026, as Delhi continues to modernise the country's infrastructure.

However, the government's ambitions go well beyond constructing one high-speed link.

Plans are afoot to build up to seven lines that will see trains running at a maximum speed of 350km per hour (217mph).

The next big high-speed rail project in the pipeline is a 560-mile line connecting Ahmedabad to Delhi.

The high-speed train is expected to operate at an average speed of 250km per hour (155mph) on an elevated corridor, cutting down the current 12-hour journey to just 3.5 hours.

The tracks will be aligned with the existing railway network to minimise the need for extensive land acquisition.

Operating at a maximum speed of 350km per hour (217mph), the train will pass through select stations in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana before reaching Delhi.

The bullet train link is expected to cost around £1.2 billion, according to various estimates.

The other lines under consideration are the Delhi-Chandigarh-Amristar corridor, which will cover 459 kilometres (285 miles).

There is also the Delhi-Agra-Kanpur-Lucknow-Varanasj bullet train which will cover a distance of 800 kilometres (497 miles).

The Varanasi-Howrah train will cover a distance of roughly 760 kilometres (472 miles) and travel at speeds of over 300 km per hour (186 mph).

Finally, the Mumbai-Nagpur bullet train will cover a distance of 765 kilometres (475 miles) via Nashik.

India's National Rail Plan also envisages another high speed rail link between Nagpur and Varanasi by extending the Mumbai-Nagpur route.
