One man has been shot dead by police after apparently going on a knife rampage at a party to mark to start of the European Championships in Germany, in which three others were reportedly injured.

The man had previously stabbed somebody else to death before threatening several others, reported local media.

The police were called to a single-family home on Genossenschaftsweg in Wolmirstedt, near Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt last night at about 9.30pm, reported German newspaper Bild.

The newspaper also shared a picture of a body covered by a blanket being stretchered from the scene.

A family had apparently invited people to a private European Championship public viewing, with hosts Germany facing Scotland in the tournament opener.

Shortly after kick-off, an unknown man appeared in the yard with a knife and immediately stabbed three of people.

When the police arrived a few minutes later, the killer ran towards them and allegedly attacked the officers.

A police spokesman said: "Firearms were used.

"The perpetrator died in hospital."

The Magdeburger Volksstimme newspaper claimed the attacker had previously stabbed another man to death in an apartment before threatening others in an allotment.

Germany has been the scene of at least two other, unrelated, knife attacks in recent days.

Earlier this month organisers of a rally against radical Islam in the south-western city of Mannheim, which claimed the life of a 29-year-old police officer.

Days later, a far-right politician was injured in a separate incident yards away from where the protest had been staged.
