The country that's building a new £1.3bn airport so big it's basically an entire city
As well as everything you would expect from an airport there will be a huge commercial and cultural offering to entertain 30m passengers a year.
Big airports are pretty impressive nowadays - with shops, cafes, bars and duty free offerings galore.
But one that aims to be “at the forefront of the best airports in the world” is on the cusp of opening in Lima, the capital of Peru.
The New Jorge Chavez is a vast airport expansion. Its architecture is inspired by the hummingbird of the Nazca culture and will boast a gigantic 210,000 square metres which as well as including the usual arrivals, check-ins and departures there will be 30,000 square metres of commercial space, hotels and VIP rooms.
A spokesperson explained more about it on an official press release for the airport being built by Lima Airport Partners (LAP).
They said: “The new unique passenger terminal that LAP is building, and which will start operating in 2025, has characteristics that put it at the forefront of infrastructures of its kind in Latin America and the world.”
The terminal will come into operation in January 2025 and will have an approximate capacity of 30 million passengers per year.
Rodrigo López, the construction manager for the LAP Passenger Terminal, told the EFE agency: "The objective we have is to deliver a terminal with a capacity of 30 million passengers, made available to the entire airport sector at the end of this year, 2024.
“The airport expansion will continue, and during 2025 we will launch a terminal with capacity for up to 40 million passengers."
It will also be the first terminal in South America with seismic isolators, which would allow it to serve humanitarian flights in the event of earthquakes.
The mission will also be to promote tourism in the country.
