North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un has directly supervised the launch of cruise missiles from a new naval ship.
This comes after North Korea hinted at taking action against US planes flying over its airspace.
Kim Jong-un's involvement adds to the escalating situation as the US, South Korea, and their allies begin their yearly large-scale military exercises. North Korea has criticised these drills, calling them preparations for an attack.
Last week, North Korea announced a plan to keep naval ships with anti-aircraft missiles on standby, citing the detection of a US reconnaissance plane in its airspace.
The Korean Central News Agency reported: “After getting on the Patrol Ship No. 661 which will be on sea alert, [Kim] acquainted himself in detail with its weapons and preparations for combat, and highly praised the ship for maintaining high mobility and mighty striking power and constant preparedness for combat to cope with sudden situation."
It added that the North Korean dictator “watched the seamen of the patrol ship staging a drill of launching strategic cruise missiles … the ship rapidly hit target without even an error".
For well over 18 months now, North Korea has been deeply engrossed in an intensive series of trials for novel armaments. Among these are ballistic missiles endowed with the potential to strike not only South Korea and Japan but also the distant shores of the United States.

Within this context, cruise missiles take the stage, characterised by their smaller size and reduced range. Yet, the use of the term "strategic" hints at a more profound capability: the potential to carry nuclear payloads.
The upcoming weeks promise an exceptional level of tension as the US and South Korea embark on the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises. This large-scale operation will draw military personnel from an assembly of nine other nations, including notable participants such as Britain, France, and Australia.
At the core of these exercises lie complex computer simulations designed to portray the grim theatre of full-scale warfare on the Korean Peninsula. This multifaceted event further encompasses over 30 field exercises, featuring a diverse array of drills, including robust air force manoeuvres.
