Merkel in soldier death condolences
German chancellor Angela Merkel has called President Hamid Karzai to express her condolences following the accidental killing of several Afghan soldiers by the German military.
A government spokesman in Berlin said that Mr Karzai thanked Ms Merkel for her call and expressed his sympathy over the deaths of three German soldiers in Afghanistan.
German soldiers were attacked by militants near the northern city of Kunduz.
An almost-11-hour long battle followed, which left the three German soldiers dead.
German troops rushing to the scene of the fighting after nightfall then killed six Afghan troops when they mistook them for insurgents, the Afghan defence ministry said.
